Exchange 2010 Powershell Database Size
Every mailbox move, whether it's to another mailbox or to Exchange Online, leaves white space in the source database. After all, a move to Exchange Online is just another MRS move.Moving the remaining mailboxes to a new database and delete the old empty database is just a quick workaround to get rid of those large database files.Imagine you have a mailbox database with 100 mailboxes of each 10 GB. Ignoring overhead and other factors for now, that would mean that the edb file is 1000 GB in size. Now let's move 90 mailboxes to Exchange Online. The edb is still 1000 GB large, but 900 GB of that is whitespace. Now create a new database and move the remaining 10 mailboxes to that database. I get the process, I guess I just don't see why it's useful. Most of my clients will, once migrated to O365, eventually decom, or stand up the latest version of exchange to act as thier management server if they are syncing identities. If you need to leave a hybrid server around (I know there is no such thing as a 'hybrid server') for something like mail relay, is it possible to delete all the system mailboxes left in the database and then remove the DB? Can you have an exchange server with 0 databases? If so I don't really see the benefit of migrating onprem to a new DB just to move to O365.Thanks for the discussion Jetz.
